Glasses are see-through!
Apr. 29th, 2010 01:00 pmYeah, so much for hiatus. This is one of those things that perennially irritates me, and I had to share.
So Toni and I were talking about our eyesight. I'd corrected something she did at her computer, and she was surprised because she can't read my screen from her desk. I explained that I can't really read it clearly, but I am very good at pattern recognition which makes up for a lot of what the glasses don't correct. (As do good color vision, and noticing even tiny movements. And phobias. I can spot bugs at distances that make them practically invisible to others.)
Then I handed her my glasses, as you do in these situations, so she could be appalled by how bad my eyesight is. I've known plenty of people who are worse off than I am, but mine's bad enough to impress those like Toni who don't wear glasses at all. Before she returned them, she said, "Oh, Stephanie, you have such beautiful blue eyes without your glasses!"
*blink* *blink*
"Yes, and I have such beautiful blue eyes with my glasses, too. You just have to be looking," I replied in my patented I-can't-believe-you're-that-stupid voice.
I don't actually think my eyes are all that pretty. I don't like blue eyes to begin with, and mine have as much grey as blue, so much of the time they just look kind of washed out. But aesthetic preferences aside, it drives me nuts when people say things like that. How do people not manage to look through the glasses to see the eyes? It's not like glasses aren't see-through! Those who can't see eyes through glasses are missing out on some of the most beautiful eyes in the world, let me tell you.
It really vexes me. It also bothers me when people who need to wear glasses wander around without them because of the idiots. I find it so much more attractive when people can see what they're doing and who they're talking to and what's going on around them.
I suppose I wouldn't be quite so opinionated if I'd ever known life without glasses. But I've been in glasses since I was six years old. I can't see more than about four inches in front of my face without them. I can't wear contacts. No one sees me without glasses, because I really only take them off for showering, swimming, and sleeping. And, except for the occasional joke ("Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses.") I've never even considered that they might detract from my appearance. I'm pretty sure that glasses don't matter to people who do.
