I wonder why it is that so many people who are not of Irish heritage are so enamored of St. Patrick's Day? Is it the excuse to get stupid drunk, or the peculiar preoccupation with redheads?

All I know is that I'd better find something green to wear tomorrow, or I'll hear about it all day long, in this very Italian town.

I'm always tempted to wear orange instead. I am Protestant, after all. But I'd have to explain it repeatedly, and then take the harassment anyway. Besides, green looks good on me and orange does not.

I inadvertently wore my Flyers jersey the day of the parade here in Philly. I realize now it was kind of appropriate.

I used to get real into the Irish thing but then I realized a)I'm not Catholic, b) my family has probably been here too long (~400 years) to qualify as that sort of Irish (we're indentured servant stock, not diaspora), and c) I never really had a 'get stupid drunk' phase, and really don't intend to start now. Also, I think that's kind of a silly way to celebrate something.

You wouldn't be the first. I've actually used the phrase myself when people misunderstand my name. ("I'm Erin." "Mary?" "No, Erin. Like 'Erin go bragh!'"

The only problem is, I've never figured out how to bragh.
