A name game

After a lunchtime conversation with
soupkills, I have a little puzzle for the truly bored (and
soupkills isn't allowed to play because he knows at least part of the answer already):
1. What do the following names have in common: Anne, Cara, David, David, Elizabeth, John, Lee, Lynn, Mark, Richard, and Steven?
2. Why are Alan, Alan, Claire, Jane, and "nothing" all left off the list?
3. One name was intentionally left off the list because it's very uncommon and thus a dead giveaway (although I think one I left on is too). There are three other names missing. Are two of them James and Marie? And what is the third?
